Spring Into Style: Choosing the Perfect Dress for Your Photoshoot

Spring is a season of renewal and vibrancy, making it the ideal time to capture beautiful moments with your loved ones. At Del Rio Photo Co., I believe that selecting the right outfits can elevate your photoshoot and complement the natural beauty of the season. In this guide, I'll explore how to choose spring dresses that enhance your photos and create timeless memories, including dresses to fit your style and budget, complete with my favorite online stores, broken down by type of location.

Lake Views and Greenery

Embrace Pastels and Floral Prints: Spring is synonymous with blooming flowers and soft colors. Opt for dresses in pastel shades like blush pink, green, lavender, or sky blue. Floral prints are also a timeless choice for spring photoshoots, adding a touch of freshness and whimsy to your ensemble. Full length gowns allow for the most movement inspired imagery, with the bonus that you don’t need to worry about shoes! Dresses above were all found on Amazon between $65-90.

Consider Light and Flowy Fabrics: Choose dresses crafted from light and breathable fabrics such as chiffon, cotton, tulle, lace or silk. Flowy dresses not only look ethereal but also catch the breeze beautifully, adding movement and grace to your photos. Dresses below are all found in JoyFolie’s collections and range from $55-250.

Opt for Timeless Silhouettes: Classic silhouettes like A-line, wrap, or fit-and-flare dresses are universally flattering and perfect for spring photoshoots. These styles complement different body types and create a polished, elegant look.

Another of my favorite stores, Baltic Born’s Guest Collection offers a variety of maxi dresses with ruffles, tulle, chiffon, and movement. If length isn’t your thing, check out their Midi Collection and Spring 2024 Collection as well.

Coordinate with Your Family or Partner: For family or couple photos, coordinate outfits by selecting complementary colors or patterns. Aim for a cohesive color palette that harmonizes without being overly matchy-matchy. Or, for mommy-and-me, consider matching dresses from JoyFolie.

JoyFolie offers adorable Mommy-and-Me dress collections well worth checking out!

Urban Settings

For urban settings, such as downtown Del Rio, restaurants/coffee shops, or shopping plazas, opt for chic, contemporary styles that stand out against the backdrop, such as this black Wey Set from JoyFolie or the Solana Ruched Dress from Baltic Born.

Saving Money & Avoiding Online Scams: It can be challenging to buy a dress that both fits the budget and isn’t actually a scam. To avoid this, stay on reputable sites with return policies and buyer protection, and check the reviews! Checking reviews on dresses actually lets you see how the dress looks on all shapes and sizes of women and whether or not it actually looks like the model image. However, I’ve found that if it looks too good to be true, it probably is (que the shocked expression when my Wish order for maternity dresses at $15 each arrived looking nothing like pictured). Try to budget for a higher end price point for your outfit if possible. Even if you only wear it once, these photos are going to last forever.

Make it stand out.

Petticoats are important when wearing long flowing tulle dresses. They help give body to the gown while enhancing the movement and elegance of the image.

Add Accessories Sparingly: Accessorize your spring dress with delicate jewelry, a wide-brimmed hat, belt, boots, duster, or a lightweight scarf. However, keep it minimal to let the dress remain the focal point of your outfit. If wearing a long flared dress, don’t forget the petticoat! A light petticoat gives dress the perfect amount of body and movement.

Plan Ahead and Test Outfits: Plan your outfits in advance— I cannot stress this enough—and do a trial run to see how they look on camera. This helps you make any necessary adjustments and ensures you feel confident and relaxed on the day of the shoot.

Pay Attention to Fit and Comfort: Ensure that your chosen dress fits well and allows you to move comfortably. Avoid overly tight or restrictive garments, as they can detract from your confidence during the photoshoot.
